Dublin to start defence of Leinster title in Tullamore

All Ireland champions Dublin look set to travel to Tullamore in the opening round of next year's Leinster football championship.

Dates and venues for the Leinster football championship have yet to be confirmed but the Irish Examiner is reporting that Dublin are heading to O’Connor Park.

Jim Gavin's five-in-row winning Dublin team have been drawn to play Westmeath in the Leinster quarter-final on May 23/24.

Westmeath chairman Billy Foley said after last month's draw that he wanted the game to be played in Mullingar but with a capacity of just under 11,000, Cusack Park isn’t deemed large enough.

O'Connor Park in Tullamore can hold in the region of 18,500 supporters and is one of the venues that the Leinster Council had selected as a suitable ground before last month's draw was made.

Leinster Council chairman Jim Bolger said: "Our policy for the last number of years is that other than Croke Park, we have identified Nowlan Park, Portlaoise, Tullamore and Wexford Park, should Wexford draw them, as suitable venues.

“That’s the policy and every county knew before the draw what the policy was."

Dublin have played their opening game of the Championship outside Croke Park every year since 2016, when they played Laois at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny.

Since that game, the Dubs have played at O'Moore Park in Portlaoise for the last three summers.
