The 'Up the Dubs' banner is coming down for good.
Dublin City Council say they will not drape the banner from the Ha'penny Bridge again after a small number of complaints on social media.
The large flag which covers the bridge reads 'Up The Dubs, Dublin City Supporting the Dubs'.
It has been a fixture on the Dublin landmark in the lead up to All Ireland football finals that Dublin have featured in since 2011.
A spokesperson for Dublin City Council told The Irish Times that the bridge is no longer an appropriate location for the display.
They said: "The Ha’penny Bridge is a protected structure and it was agreed that this location is not suitable for displaying such banners"
A number of social media users bemoaned the banner on Twitter last year, but DCC says no official complaints were ever received.
The Dubs are bigger than Jesus
The Irish Times note that the only concern raised with them came via a single phone call concerning the sign, on April 6th 2018 – the caller apparently cited the inability of tourists to take photos as grounds for the banner’s removal.
Former Lord Mayor Christy Burke vented his annoyance at the decision to bin the banner when he spoke to 98FM’s Dublin Talk: “At the moment the Dublin football team are more popular than Jesus Christ.
The decision to remove the banner from the Ha’penny Bridge is probably due to bitter Mayo or Kerry fans complaining. Says the majority would favour keeping the banner
"At the moment the Dublin football team are more popular than Jesus Christ.
"One official complaint, probably from a Mayo or Kerry or some other anti-Dublin county.
"Here again democracy doesn't prevail because the silent majority would've favoured the banner"
What do you make of Dublin City Council's plans to stop decorating the Ha’penny bridge for the Dubs?
