Dublin County Board on the verge of Spawell purchase

Despite initially losing out on a bid for the Spawell Complex in 2015, the Dublin County Board may have been given a second chance to purchase the site.

The NAMA-owned property was on the market in 18-months ago, but the Dublin County Board's bid for the site adjacent to the M50 proved unsuccessful.  It now looks like they may buy the property from the investment fund that defeated them.

According to The Star, the deal could be completed before the end of the month. It would solve the problems regarding a mid-sized stadium for Dublin GAA, and would also give the sport a base on he city's southside.

With games spilt between Croke Park and Parnell Park, there need for a mid-sized stadium in Dublin is apparent. The Spawell site would be the site of a new 25,000-seat stadium.

The site's location was seen as one of the crucial factors in the bid. The Spawell Complex is located close to the M50 and also close to Ballyboden-St. Enda's and St. Jude's GAA clubs.

The County Board are not in a position to develop Parnell Park, due to it's close residential location and had hoped the south Dublin complex could be used to host matches that may have been to small to play in Croke Park.

It has been reported that if the bid was confirmed, work could not begin on the site until 2020 at the earliest.
