Dublin and Kilkenny dominate Leinster GAA Pearse Medal shortlists

Four stars of Dublin's successful 2016 All-Ireland title win are on the shortlist for the Leinster GAA Pearse Medal.

Diarmuid Connolly, Jonny Cooper, Brian Fenton and Dean Rock are on the list of the football nominees which have been drawn up to honour this year’s outstanding players in the Leinster senior football and hurling championships.

This new accolade will see the overall winner in both codes awarded a specially commissioned Pearse Medal, which acknowledges the link between the 1916 leader and the Leinster Council of the GAA.

Westmeath's James Dolan was the only non-Dublin player on the list of nominees for football in 2016.

Meanwhile, 2016 All-Ireland runners-up Kilkenny dominate the five-man list for hurling nominees with a trio of players included.

The Cats are represented by Cillian Buckley, JohnJo Farrell and Paul Murphy.

Galway's David Burke and Westmeath's Niall O'Brien

The overall Leinster senior hurler and footballer of the year will be announced early next month.
