Mayo are set to be without Diarmuid O’Connor for Saturday night's All Ireland Senior Football round three qualifier against Armagh.
The Mayo News is reporting that O'Connor fractured his wrist in training last night. If the break is confirmed it would likely mean that O'Connor will miss the rest of the All-Ireland campaign.
The paper is further reporting that the Mayo captain will undergo surgery on his wrist this week as a result of the injury.
Mayo GAA released their injury news on Wednesday morning and did not confirm a wrist break but said O'Connor "suffered a wrist injury in training last night."
"He was immediately assessed by our medical team & will undergo further examination later this week when the full extent of the injury will be confirmed."
Mayo already have a lengthy injury list with midfielder Matthew Ruane also ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a broken collarbone while Tom Parsons (knee) and Seamie O’Shea (ankle) are both attempting to work their way back to fitness.
O'Connor had led Mayo to their first National Football League title earlier this year and Mayo had been tipped to come closest to challenging Dublin in the Championship this year. However, Mayo were knocked out of the Connacht Championship at the semi-final stage by Roscommon who beat their neighbours in Castlebar for the first time since 1986 in championship football.
Mayo bounced back from their defeat in Connacht to beat Down 1-16 to 1-11, although Mayo manager James Horan noted after the game that he was concerned by the manner in which Down created goal opportunities.
Horan also confirmed last week that O'Connor's older brother, Cillian, is close to making his return to the side.
"It's great that he's back. He had a bad injury, he's working with a great medical crew so we're just trying to get him back. He was out for a number of months. James Carr also is very close, there's around five players in contention."
Mayo will face Armagh this Saturday in the round three qualifiers in Castlebar, with throw-in at 7 pm. You can see the full round three qualifier fixtures here.
