Wexford extended their winning run in Division 1B this afternoon with a 1-17 to 0-15 win over Offaly and in doing so secured promotion to Division 1A.
Fitzgerald praised Offaly's performance and said that winning promotion in his first season with the county was "massive".
"We're thrilled," he said. "Offaly fought extremely hard today and that's what I always think of when I think of Offaly. They beat Wexford by nine points last year below in Wexford Park.
"Any time you play them, and I know with my experiences with Clare, they're going to put it up to you. I love seeing them when they play with that fight. It's great and that's what you want.
"I'm one of these lads who are mad for Offaly to get right back into the mix. Fair play to them, but they need to keep building on it.
"But [promotion is] absolutely massive, we're thrilled."
Wexford battled the conditions this afternoon and came away with a hard-fought victory, something Fitzgerald says is to be expected when you go to O'Connor Park.
"The pitch was very soft, so even the ball coming along the ground was bobbling all over the place. Both teams battled extremely hard and Offaly never gave in. They were going right to the end and had a penalty they could have scored.
"We had an unreal goal chance that we fluffed down at the other end. It was a tough game but I told them coming down today I thought that was going to be the way it was going to be and that's the way it was.
"I want to see Offaly doing that more often and competing more often."
