Comer Hopes To Be Back In Mid June

Galway forward Damien Comer is targeting a return to action in the middle of June. Comer broke a bone in his foot at Christmas and missed the entire Division One League campaign after having surgery.

He'll miss the Tribesmen's Connacht Senior Football Championship opener at London and a potential semi-final against Sligo next month but he's told Off The Ball's Maire Treasa Ni Cheallaigh that he hopes to return soon after that.

"I'm seven weeks post-op now on Thursday, so just rehabbing away and trying to get myself back in as good a shape as possible ahead of when I'm ready to return to play. It'll be another few weeks anyway because it's slow enough (to recover), the doctor and physio have given me a mid-June time-frame. Once it heals properly and it gets back right I don't really mind, if it takes a few more weeks I'll take that."

In Comer's absence Galway retained their Division One status by finishing in fifth place in the top-flight. He's now looking forward to helping Kevin Walsh's side in the Championship.

"It's always hard watching your teammates play when you feel you should be out playing yourself but the I suppose the fact they were going well in the league made it a bit easier. But then on the contrary, when they are going well you want to be part of it as well. It's difficult enough but I just had to concentrate on getting myself right and trying to get back as quick as possible.

"I've always said it that it's an awful lot easier to be playing than being a spectator because the nerves would get the better of you on the sidelines but it's great to see the younger lads coming in and stepping up...digging deep when needed, especially in the wins against Mayo and Monaghan."
