Austin Gleeson and Paul Geaney scoop player of the month awards for August

Waterford hurler Austin Gleeson and Kerry footballer Paul Geaney have both scooped the player of the month awards for August.

The pair were this evening named the GAA-GPA Opel Player of the Month winners for August after a pair of outstanding performances against Kilkenny and Dublin respectively.

Gleeson was one of the star performers for The Deise during their All-Ireland semi-final draw with Kilkenny and again during the replay a week later. His point-scoring ability brought Derek McGrath's side within a whisker of a final date with Tipperary scoring 1-7 over the course of the two games.

Geaney, meanwhile, was one of the shining light's for Kerry in their defeat to Dublin in one of the all-time great football championship comebacks. His goal helped Kerry into a five point lead at the break but a resilient Dublin side came out in the second-half to overturn the deficit and book their place in the final against Mayo.

"Congratulations to Austin and Paul on being recognised by their fellow players for their performances in the All-Ireland semi-finals last month," said Chief Executive of the GPA, Dessie Farrell.

"While Waterford and Kerry bowed out after epic battles, both players delivered outstanding individual displays and contributed greatly to games that will live long in the memory.

"While they'll obviously still be hurting after coming so close to reaching the respective deciders against Kilkenny and Dublin, Austin and Paul can be very proud of their performances and, as two of the most talented players in the country, can look forward with great optimism to the seasons ahead.

"Many thanks to all the players who voted, to Dave Sheeran and Opel for their support and we look forward to the annual All-Star nominations next month."
