There is something special happening at today’s Senior Men’s Football Championship Semi-Final.
The GAA is very publicly showing its support of women and girls in sport by giving the 20x20 movement centre stage in Croke Park.
Everyone here today and everyone watching at home is being asked to Show Your Stripes and Go See For Yourself – by pledging to see more women’s sporting events over the next 18 months.
20x20 has gained huge momentum nationally in its ambition to shift our cultural perception of women in sport. The movement’s slogan is ‘If She Can’t See It, She Can’t Be It’ and its aims are to increase media coverage of women in sport, female participation, and attendance at women’s games and events - all by 20% by 2020.
20x20 is across all sports so there’s a lot to choose from. Earlier this summer they launched Ireland’s first-ever Women in Sport Calendar listing fixtures online across a wide range of sports to make it easier to find what’s on and where.
A good place to start is the Camogie Championship Semi-Finals (August 17th) and Final (September 8th), and the Ladies Football Championship Semi-Finals (August 25th) and Final (September 15th) which have set targets to increase audiences for each game in line with the movement.
