Foden sparkles as City close in on Premier League summit

Manchester City returned to the Premier League's top-4 with Phil Foden's goal enough to give them victory at home to Brighton.

Pep Guardiola's side are also just a point off second placed Liverpool - with a game in hand - despite a late penalty miss from Raheem Sterling.

City's opener came a minute before half-time.

Kevin de Bruyne pulled the strings on the inside-left channel, before finding Foden who fired a low shot past Robert Sanchez in the Brighton goal.

De Bruyne also helped win City a late penalty, but Sterling's effort flew high over the crossbar.

"I feel that we're back to our best," Foden told BT Sport after the game.

"We can definitely take confidence from the last few results.

"But today I still felt we could have done better, and we dug deep to get the win.

"Overall I'm proud of the team - how we kept going until the final whistle - and overall it's a great result."

With his fifth goal of the season, Foden is now City's top scorer.

But the 20-year old said a win over Graham Potter's side was hard-earned, "They defended really well, they had a good game plan.

"They made it difficult for us to break them down, so to get the goal just before half-time was really important, and it ended up being the winning goal so I'm delighted."
