FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings over Brazil-Argentina suspension

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings in relation to the suspension of Brazil and Argentina's World Cup Qualifier on Sunday.

The game was called off as officials, believed to be from Brazil's health authority, ran on to the pitch shortly after kick-off over an alleged coronavirus breach by the visitors' England-based players.

Under Brazilian rules, visitors who have been in the UK in the 14 days before entering the country must quarantine on arrival.

Emiliano Buendia, Emiliano Martinez, Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero were involved in the fixture.

The Brazilian Football Confederation said afterward that it 'deeply regretted' the events that caused the abandonment.

Argentina meanwhile insist they followed all protocols and did not break any rules.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has described the situation as "crazy."

A statement from the governing body on Tuesday read;

"Following the analysis of the official match reports related to the World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina, FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened involving both member associations.

"The two teams were asked to provide further information on the facts which led to the suspension of the match, which will be gathered and then thoroughly reviewed by FIFA's disciplinary committee.

Updates will follow in due course."

Tottenham confirmed on Monday that Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero will be fined and disciplined after they joined up with Lionel Scaloni's squad without permission.
