F1 season hitting the Algarve as North American swing bites the dust

The 2020 Formula 1 season has been forced to take another detour as a result of COVID-19.

Its swing through the Americas is no longer possible because of the pandemic.

F1 organisers remain hopeful of delivering a 15-18 race season, climaxing in the Gulf in mid-December.

Races in Brazil, the United States, Mexico and Canada are the latest victims of the virus.

In their place will be a Portuguese Grand Prix in the Algarve city of Portimao (October 25).

The legendary Nurburgring in Germany will host its first Grand Prix since 2013. While the season will also pay a first visit to Imola in 17-years.

So far there have been three Grand Prix since the season's resumption on July 5 - two in Austria, and one in Hungary.

The first two weekends in August will see back-to-back races at Silverstone.

"We are pleased that we continue to make strong progress in finalising our plans for the 2020 season and are excited to welcome Nurburgring, Portimao and Imola to the revised calendar,” said Chase Carey, Chairman and CEO of Formula 1.

"We want to thank the promoters, the teams, and the FIA for their full support in our efforts to bring our fans exciting racing this season during an unprecedented time.

"We also want to pay tribute to our incredible partners in the Americas and look forward to being back with them next season when they will once again be able to thrill millions of fans around the world."
