Aviva set to host 2024 Europa League final as Euro 2020 compensation

Dublin's Aviva Stadium is poised to be awarded the final of the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League.

The match will be seen as compensation for Dublin's inability to host its allocation of Euro 2020 matches.

The Aviva would have been the venue for the last-16 clash of England and Germany on Tuesday night, having previously hosted Slovakia, Poland and Sweden in the group stage.

However, an inability to guarantee the stadium could operate at the required 25 per cent capacity saw Dublin's matches divvied out between Wembley and St. Petersburg.

Having seen the Aviva stripped of its Euro matches, FAI CEO Jonathan Hill confirmed in April that the Lansdowne Road venue will be granted a European final of some hue after 2023.

OTB Sports understands that the 2023/24 Europa League season will culminate in Dublin.

Seville's Sanchez Pizjuan stadium will host the Europa League final in 2022, with Budapest's Puskas Arena following suit in 2023.

The Ballsbridge stadium has hosted the Europa League final once before.

In 2011, Porto got the better of a cagey all-Portugeuse affair, with Radamel Falcao's goal seeing them beat Braga 1-0.

Local authorities have been told there is an extremely high chance UEFA will award the 2024 decider to the Aviva.

Commenting on UEFA's promise of a final in April, FAI CEO Jonathan Hill said, "I am delighted that UEFA have recognised our endeavours by agreeing to work with us on big projects for Dublin and Ireland in the future including the staging of a UEFA Club final at the Aviva Stadium after 2023 which is something to really look forward to as we enter our Centenary year."

The promise of a final wasn't the only compensation the FAI received from UEFA having seen the Euros moved.

It was also confirmed in April that €500,000 would be put towards the redevelopment of Dalymount Park as a Euro 2020 Legacy Project.
