Alvaro Morata reveals 'threats' to his children

Spain striker Alvaro Morata revealed that he and his family have received 'threats and insults' off the back of his performances at Euro 2020.

The Juventus striker has been subject to abuse from fans throughout his international career, despite holding a record of 20 goals in 43 appearances for Spain.

He was booed by his own fans in a pre-tournament friendly against Portugal and was again the focus of attacks during Spain's Euro matches, which they hosted in Seville.

Despite scoring his countries only goal against Poland, Morata has missed significant chances, along with a missed penalty in Spain's 5:0 defeat of Slovakia

Speaking to the Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, Morata revealed the extent of the abuse both he and his children have received.

He said, "I understand I get criticism for not scoring goals. I'm the first to know and accept it but I wish people would put themselves in the position of seeing what it is to receive threats and insults to your family.

"People have been saying 'I hope your children die'. I had to put my phone away."

Morata went on to say that the abuse has been confounded by the fact that Spain have played their games at a home ground.

"Memes don't bother me, but what annoys me is what my wife has to go through. My kids go to Seville with their dad's name on their shirts. Yes, they've had things said to them. I understand the criticism for not doing my job well. But there's a limit."

The former Atletico and Real Madrid man said the abuse has affected his sleep and preparation for games.

"I didn't sleep for nine hours after the Poland game, I was angry because I had a chance and Spain couldn't win.

"I wish people would put themselves in other people's position. People whistle me because it's what they hear. Others incite it."

Spain will play Croatia on Monday in Copenhagen in the round of 16, with manager Luis Enrique  saying he will stick by Morata despite the abuse and apparent lull in form, saying, "Morata plus ten more will start."
