Edinson Cavani Instagram post to be investigated by the FA

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani will be investigated by the FA over a comment made on social media.

The striker used a racially offensive term in a since-deleted Instagram post, in response to a comment from a supporter following his injury-time winner for United against Southampton on Sunday.

Cavani came off the bench to score twice - including an injury-time winner - as United fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Southampton at St Mary's.

And after a fan congratulated the Uruguayan striker on Instagram he replied "gracias negrito!", before eventually deleting the post.

According to Sky Sports, United have stressed that the word was used in an "affectionate manner" and has different connotations in Uruguay, where Cavani is from. The offensive word used by Cavani is the same as that used by Luis Suarez in his now-infamous clash with United's Patrice Evra in 2010, which saw the then-Liverpool man banned for eight games.

The FA sent out new guidelines on racist language and behaviour on social media at the start of the year, with offences carrying a minimum ban of three matches.

Last season, both Bernardo Silva and Dele Alli were suspended for a game each following racially offensive social media posts.

United moved up to 8th in the table following yesterday's win, with Edinson Cavani playing the decisive role.

After coming off the bench at half time, the striker set up Bruno Fernandes for United's opening goal, before scoring twice himself.
