Former Ireland and Everton player Kevin Kilbane joined The Football Show to give his reaction to Sean Dyche's appointment.
Sean Dyche is the new Everton manager.
Dyche and former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa were reported as finalists for the position. Everton sacked Frank Lampard last week after a terrible run of form. Everton are 19th in the league after 20 games. Dyche made his name in the Premier League as the Burnley manager, keeping his team up despite very limited investment in his squad.
Spending a lot of money hasn't been the problem for Everton in recent years. They've spent too much money at times and more often than not on the wrong players. Dyche will give the team an identity. He will organize them defensively in a way Lampard didn't and create an identity that helps them win games.
But fans might not be excited to watch the type of football he plays.
Kevin Kilbane thinks that's somewhat of a misnomer though. Perception isn't necessarily reality when it comes to Dyche's style of play.
"I just hope there isn't that negative feeling towards him straight away because of how Burnley played," Kilbane said.
"I actually have been in total admiration of what he did at Burnley over the years. And even the style of football they were playing at times. It probably went under the radar a little bit. I think a lot of the games that were always shown on Super Sunday were kind of dull games. I think that's where a lot of people got their opinion of Burnley."
Everton are one win away from escaping the relegation zone. They have 15 points. Leicester are 14th with 18 points, so the bottom half of the table is condensed. Dyche can have a huge impact if he just strings a run of results together. The challenge for Dyche is his first game is against league-leading Arsenal and then a derby against Everton.
If Dyche can even get a point from those two games, it will enthuse the fan base and give the team optimism that they can stay up.
"A lot of the time they were playing good football. They were solid and difficult to beat. And that's the most important thing for Everton now over the next few months. Certainly be difficult to beat, get the points on the board, get well organized.
"And don't be open and too elaborate. That's the way it's got to be for the next while because the most important thing now is staying in the Premier League.
"Everybody recognizes they should be a lot higher than they are. Over the course of the season, they've been one of the worst teams in the Premier League."
Will Sean Dyche be successful at Everton? And how long will he last in the role?
