Davy Russell set for Navan return this weekend

Davy Russell could make his return to the saddle at Navan this Saturday, following 50 days on the sidelines recovering from injuries.

The three-time champion jockey has not ridden since the Galway Festival due to a number of niggling issues.

“There were a couple of old fractures that didn’t stop me at the time but continued being a little bit sore and they caught up with me a small bit," he told the Irish Times.

Russell says he had hoped to return at the Listowel Festival but is now targetting this Saturday's card at Navan.

“They were just niggly. I was going to come back at Listowel but they just hadn’t come right. But all is good and it looks like, without being certain, I’m aiming to be back on Saturday at Navan".

Trainer Paul Nicholls has confirmed that that RSA Chase winner Topofthegame will miss the rest of the season with "a minor leg injury".

The seven-year-old had been in training for the upcoming Ladbrokes Trophy as well as next year's Cheltenham Gold Cup.

"While the problem is not serious it is enough to make us stop with him at this stage and give him plenty of time to recover", Nicholas says of the issue.

"It’s frustrating because he’d done so well over the summer and has been cantering away nicely at home ahead of a crack at the Ladbrokes Trophy. Hopefully he will be back in training again next season when his long term target will again be the Gold Cup."
