Davy Fitzgerald has broken his silence on his future - saying he will make a decision in the next 48 hours.
“Listen, I’ve to decide whether I am staying in Wexford or not. That’s the most-important question. I’ve to get my own mind sorted and I’ll be doing that very soon,” he told Midwest Radio.
When pressed on how long that timeframe would be he added, “Very soon would be in the next day or two.”
Tough call
He outlined the struggle he’s had deciding where his future lies:
“Listen, my heart is torn-unreal there for the last number of weeks. I think people appreciate it’s a massive-long drive down to Wexford.
“For me it’s probably two and a half to three hours down and the same back. That’s three or four nights a week.”
He explained that despite the time commitment he is reluctant to walk away from the county:
“I’ve a very special bunch of boys down there so, that’s what’s taking me so long."
Commenting on reports linking him with the vacant Galway job he said:
“The one thing I will say to you is, I haven’t talked to one person from Galway.”
“There you go, you’ve got some scoop…” he concluded.
Davy Fitzgerald's Wexford
Davy Fitzgerald has been the manager of the Wexford senior hurlers since October 2016, guiding them to the Leinster title in 2019, their first in fifteen years.
Wexford went on to lose the All-Ireland semi-final this year, falling short against eventual All-Ireland champions Tipperary.
Fitzgerald's management CV includes time in charge of the Waterford hurlers; reaching four successive All-Ireland semi-finals and winning the Munster title in 2010.
In 2011, he returned home to take over as Clare boss, and guided his young side to the All-Ireland title in 2013.
Fitzgerald has also managed a number of club and college sides - including a spell with Galway star Joe Canning back in the mid-2000s, while in charge of a star-studded LIT side that won Fitzgibbon Cup titles in 2005 and 2007.
