David Hawkshaw to join Connacht from Leinster

Connacht's major recruitment drive ahead of next season continues apace, with David Hawkshaw the latest new arrival.

The versatile back follows Adam Byrne and Peter Dooley in swapping Leinster for Connacht.

Hawkshaw, 22, is capable of playing at either 10 or 12, and has played on eight occasions for Leinster.

He shot to prominence at under-20 level, when he captained Ireland to a Six Nations Grand Slam in 2019.

News of his impending arrival follows the signing of Byron Ralston yesterday from Western Force.

Back-rower Shamus Hurley Langton has also agreed a move to join Andy Friend's squad.

“I understand that I now need to start getting games under my belt to add that extra layer of experience to my game," Hawkshaw said as news of his move was confirmed.

"The chance to play with Connacht Rugby and to hopefully put my hand up for selection on a more consistent basis is all that I want and the rest is up to me.

"I look forward to doing that next season."

Head coach Friend believes Hawkshaw has the ability to be a major addition.

“David has the potential to be another exciting player for us," Friend said.

"He’s still young so will have the platform at Connacht to show what he can do, whether that be as an out-half or inside centre.

"His leadership attributes as shown during his time as captain of the Ireland U20s are also clear to see.”
