"Is it Mayo or is it teams are copping on to Mayo?" | David Brady on Roscommon loss

David Brady was on OTB AM today discussing Mayo and their loss to Roscommon at the weekend.

The Mayo man saw where flaws are beginning to lie with his county as they lost by a point to Roscommon in their Championship game on Saturday.

“When you look at it, it was a fantastic game of football... that Mayo entered into and the minute that ball was thrown up I think a lot of people sensed it, Roscommon were up for it.”

“They brought a physicality to the game that matched their intensity and they didn’t drop that from the very first to the last minute.”

Brady said that the big issue for Mayo is the same as it has been over the last few years.

“No matter who they play against, whether it’s the Derrys, the Kildares… everyone has a chance and everyone has been given a chance and that’s probably a failure from a Mayo perspective on the way they approach games that they open up an opportunity for every team because of the way they play.

The issue manifested around the half-back line as Mayo allowed themselves to be opened up.

“It would have been torture to have been playing in the full back-line with the amount of space that was afforded to the inside Roscommon forward-line.”

Mayo have also been struggling in Connacht for the last few years, with their last title being from 2015. Brady pointed out on the show what their last bad run was.

“The last time we had a bad run, from a Mayo perspective in not winning a Connacht provincial was 1956-63. That was the worst barren spell form a Connacht perspective.”

This led Brady to question if the issue was whether teams were figuring Mayo out now.

“If you look at it, you go how do I beat Mayo? First of all, you don’t give them the space that has been afforded to them in the past by teams. You frustrate them. I think that’s a major bone of contention. If you can frustrate this Mayo team and get in their face, it doesn’t suit them, they don’t like it.”

“You frustrate them, you put them under pressure in the kick and time and time again the wrong options were taken.”

While Connacht hasn’t been good to Mayo, their ability to make it into the Super 8’s regardless was brought up. Brady wasn’t so quick to jump to that conclusion though.

“We’ve seen this film before but I don’t know when this box-set is going to end.”
