New Tour de France film looking for Dublin extras

If you've got some zany '90s fashion knocking about in the wardrobe or attic, there's good reason to dust it off.

Back in the summer of 1998, the Tour de France started off in Ireland, winding its way from Dublin all the way to Cork, before the riders resisted the urge to swim across the sea to France and took more appropriate transport to the French leg of the competition.

Well, there's a new film, The Racer, by director Kieron J. Walsh about that 1998 Tour. There are going to be scenes shot right here in Ireland. And that's where you come in.

Extras

They will be shooting scenes from the start of the Tour in Merrion Square, Dublin on Saturday June 15th. Which brings us back to that '90s gear you may have kept for safe-keeping.

The production for extras to be part of the cheering crowd for those Merrion Square scenes. All you need to do is be at Merrion Square from 2pm this Saturday and then line up at the barriers that are put up to frame the route. Crowd scenes should take about two hours to do.

There are just a couple of house rules:

  • Bring your enthusiasm and energy for when the crowd gets into a frenzy
  • Feel free to go through your closet to find your best nineties look to wear on the day!
  • Smartphones were but a twinkle in scientists' eyes back in the late '90s, so make sure to keep them out of sight during filming
  • And if you've got any national flags, bring them with you to wave around
