"I know how things work" - Conor Murray on recovering his best form

Conor Murray believes that he is adept at blocking out criticism of his form, as he prepares to face Japan in the Rugby World Cup this weekend.

There has been criticism of Murray in some quarters this season, with concerns that the Munster back might not be at the top of his game - but he responded with a wry smile.

"Cheers," he said to questions implying a dip in his form last season.

"You always look at your performance, first and foremost. I felt that during the last year that I wasn't too far off playing my best.

"It is not as if it went drastically wrong, it was just a couple of games that I might not have been happy with," said Murray.

But it is one of the foibles of the modern game that Murray believes has amplified the critical voices this campaign.

"I think as a 9 or 10, you are going to get the plaudits when things go well and probably get a little bit more criticism when things don't go to plan.

"That is something throughout my career that I have got used to, and at times probably struggled with.

"I am aware of the way things work. For me, I just focused on trying to get better and try and play as well as I know I can week-on-week.

"I didn't pay too much attention to that. You have people that are asking 'are you OK?' and 'how is your form?' but I have seen that before. I think I know how to deal with it."

Murray remains hopeful that this weekend will be fruitful for Ireland as they look to build on the win in Pool A against Scotland.

"Last week was a good way to kick off the World Cup and this weekend is going to be a big occasion - hopefully, we can put in a performance to match it."
