Chris Hughton looks set to take his first steps in international management with Ghana.

The Black Stars sacked Milovan Rajevac earlier this week, following a dismal performance at the Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana finished bottom of Group C, with their solitary point coming in a draw with Gabon.

The Serb, Rajevac had only been appointed in September. This was his second term, and far less successful than the first which saw him lead Ghana to the brink of a World Cup semi-final in 2010.

Hughton was on the shortlist to take the job in the autumn, according to Ghanaian journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, but lost out to Rajevac.

It's reported that Hughton is in Ghana, where he will meet with the country's Football Federation.

The former Republic of Ireland defender has been out of work since September, when he was fired by Nottingham Forest having won just a single point from their first seven games.

Since then, Forest have recovered under his replacement Steve Cooper, knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup and are just one point off the playoff spots in the Championship.

63-year old Hughton has deep connections to the West African nation, given that his father was born there.

However, he is just one of a number of contenders for the vacant Ghana job.

Former Netherlands midfielder George Boateng - now a youth coach at Aston Villa - ex-Ghana midfielder Ibrahim Tanko, and Borussia Dortmund assistant coach Otto Addo are all in the running.

But it's believed Hughton is the preferred candidate of the GFA's executive committee.
