Celtic order removal of fans' "unacceptable" Palestinian flags

Celtic are incurring the wrath of influential supporters' groups after removing Palestine flags from inside Parkhead.

The ground's North Curve was bedecked in the Palestine flag in a show of solidarity with those subject to Israeli bombing in Gaza.

At least 53 people have been killed in the region since Israel ramped up their attacks on Monday.

Celtic supporters have had a long history of support for Palestine, with the flag frequently displayed inside Parkhead during games over the years.

But the latest display has not gone down well with club hierarchy.

They claim a "small group" have exploited the opportunity to pay tribute to departing captain Scott Brown.

Having made over 600 appearances for the Glasgow club, the combative midfielder leaves for Aberdeen and a new player/coach role.

Celtic say fans were invited to display banners inside the stadium in tribute to Brown ahead of Wednesday night's final home game of the season against St. Johnstone.

The decision to remove the flags has proved deeply unpopular, with fans on social media labelling the club "a disgrace" and "an embarrassment".

Celtic described the display as unacceptable.

Celtic FC statement:

We had invited supporters to pay tribute to our Club captain, Scott Brown, by giving them the opportunity to display their own banners in the stadium.

Unfortunately a small group, which was given access in good faith, has attempted to exploit this opportunity, taken advantage of an occasion intended for our Club captain, Scott Brown, and used it for a different purpose.

Clearly this is unacceptable and the display was immediately taken down by the Club.
