CAS upholds UEFA decision to expel Russian clubs

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has denied a request from the Russian Football Union (FUR) for a stay on their UEFA sanctions.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, UEFA took the step of barring Russian clubs from their competitions. The main outcome of that decision was Spartak Moscow being expelled from the UEFA Europa League.

In their stead, RB Leipzig progressed to the quarter-finals with a bye.

The Russian Football Union lodged appeals with CAS regarding that UEFA sanction, and that of FIFA which means Russia won't be able to compete in this month's World Cup playoffs.

As part of their appeal, the Russian Football Union argued for a stay on the sanctions, effectively allowing their teams to continue as normal until final judgement from CAS arrived.

In the case of the UEFA sanction, CAS has denied the FUR a pause on their punishment.

The FUR also called for expedited hearings, something CAS has also knocked back.

The CAS decisions on the FUR’s requests to stay the execution of the FIFA decisions for the duration of the CAS proceedings are likely to be issued at the end of this week.

As things stand, Poland will receive a bye to the final round of their playoff path where they'll play either Czech Republic or Sweden.
