Carlow's sporting Mt Rushmore | Here are the contenders

On Friday's OTB AM the responsibility for deciding upon Carlow's sporting Mt Rushmore will be taken on by Brendan Hennessy and Patrick Mullins, with former football manager Turlough O'Brien making the final pitch.

Here are some of the main contenders in with a shout of being selected.

Carlow

When it comes down to selecting Carlow's four sporting Rushmore figures, there will likely be some consensus reached on the argument for Sean O'Brien's inclusion.

A multiple Champions Cup winner, a Grand Slam winner with Ireland and a Lion, the case against his inclusion would be hard made.

With Patrick Mullins among the judges this week, horse racing is likely to make up a share of the contenders too with the legendary trainer Paddy Prendergast and two-time Grand National winning jockey Arthur Thompson likely to be in the mix.

The selection for this week's Rushmore will be coming from a broad range of sporting disciplines, however.

For a relatively small county, Carlow has produced some amount of stand out sporting figures from the world of athletics.

Marcus Lawlor, Molly Scott and Eamonn Kinsella have all impressed on the track to varying degrees, while the likes of TJ Kearns competed at three successive Olympic games (1988-96).

Sean Drea won medals on the rowing's world stage and the Paralympian Gabriel Shelly won gold in the 2000 Paralympic Games in Australia.

In soccer, Newport County's FA Cup giant-killer Padraig Amond will be in with a certain shout of consideration.

A League of Ireland winner with Shamrock Rovers and and FAI Cup winner with Sligo Rovers, his professional career in football will stand him in good stead.

In GAA then, Carlow's selectors will have a few key names to work through as Paddy Quirke and Johnny Nevin will all be in the mix come Friday morning.
