WATCH: 'Keeper mess up brings Mick McCarthy his first Cardiff defeat

Mick McCarthy suffered his first defeat as Cardiff City manager after goalkeeper Dillon Phillips managed to let in a late Adam Masina free-kick.

Drawing 1-1 with promotion hopefuls Watford in the dying moments of Saturday's fixture, Masina's free-kick appeared to catch 'keeper Phillips unawares.

Although the ball came right down the middle of his goal, Masina's shot went in and the former Republic of Ireland boss suffered his first defeat since joining Cardiff back in January.

Giving Watford a 2-1 win, the Hornets moved up to 2nd in the EFL Championship table while the Bluebirds now sit 7 points off the playoff places in 8th.

After an 11-game unbeaten run, today's defeat is the first that Mick McCarthy has suffered since taking over what was back in January a club looking in some danger of being relegated.

Elsewhere, there was good news for Ireland's Conor Hourihane as the Championship's other Welsh club Swansea City picked up an important 1-0 against Luton Town in the day's early kick-off.

Sitting behind Watford in 3rd place on goal-difference, Swansea have one game fewer played than the London club.

On loan from Aston Villa, the Irish midfielder Hourihane scored the all-important goal in today's win capping off a swift counter-attack with a tidy finish.

The young Irish striker Troy Parrot was also on target for Ipswich Town to get his first goal in senior football.

As the Tractor Boys picked up a crucial 1-0 against Plymouth Argyle, the loanee from Spurs will be hoping he can help the club out of League One and back to the Championship this season.

To top off a good day for Republic of Ireland internationals in England, Callum O'Dowda got on the scoresheet as Bristol City defeated Birmingham 3-0 in the Championship.
