Callum Robinson sends message with pointed celebration

Callum Robinson appeared to celebrate scoring on Saturday night with a pointed message to those who have been discussing his COVID-19 vaccine stance during the week.

The Irish international was the talk of the week after he publicly revealed that he has not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine.

One among a small number of players in the current squad seemingly content to live on without the vaccine, Robinson came under media scrutiny for his decision.

Named among Stephen Kenny's starting XI against Azerbaijan on Saturday night, the West Bromwich Albion man opened up the scoring with a spectacular left-footed effort.

What might yet be an extremely important goal for his manager's tenure as Irish boss, Robinson's celebration was not lost on those watching the match.

As footage of a jubilant Kenny switched back to Robinson, the Irish player could be seen with both of his fingers stuck in his ears.

The intended meaning of this was not lost on many.

Robinson's Ireland teammate John Egan was among those who spoke out against the reaction to his treatment following his mid-week revelation.

"First and foremost, Callum was asked a question and he gave an answer," Egan stated.  "He didn't come out and say he was against the vaccination or anything.

"So, I was quite disappointed to see how many people jumped down his throat. Whether or not to get the vaccination or not is a personal choice, not everybody is going to believe the same way.

"I don't think Cal came out and said he was against the vaccination, I think he simply just answered a question and said he hasn't had it yet.

"So, as far as that's concerned Cal is a teammate and a friend of mine so hopefully he can kick on with Ireland and do well."

Following Robinson's comments, the Football Association of Ireland stated that they have encouraged all players to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
