Disappointment for Irish Boxers at World Championships

It's been a disappointing morning for Irish boxers at the Women's World Championships in Siberia.

First Cavan flyweight Ceire Smith lost her last 16 match to number one seed North Korea's Choi Pang on a 3-2 split decision.

Smith started well with a good first round against Choi Pang, the current World and Asian 51kg champion.

She was on the floor late in the frame but that was ruled a slip.

World number one Choi Pang eventually won out with neither managing to land a telling blow.

The final scores were 30-27,29-28,29-28 to Choi Pang and 29-28,29-28 to Smith.

Then Belfast featherweight Michaela Walsh was eliminated 4-1 at the same stage of the competition by Russia's Liudmila Vorontsova.

Walsh countered well in all three rounds against the aggression of Vorontsova but four of the five judges leaned toward the busy Ulan-Ude native and former European Youth champion.

Dundalk lightweight Amy Broadhurst and Cork welter Christina Desmond are in action in the last 16 tomorrow.
