The Kick Off: Premier League return isn't all you've got to mark down in today's diary

SOCCER

The Barclays Premier League returns today with Manchester United and Tottenham getting the opportunity to get the new season underway.

Sergio Romero looks set to start in goal for United after Louis van Gaal confirmed that David De Gea was not in the right frame of mind to play while the speculation over a move to Real Madrid continues.

Romero could be one of several new signings that van Gaal could start with in today's early kick-off at 12.45pm, with the likes of Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay all hoping to make their competitive debuts at Old Trafford.

In today's 3pm matches, newly promoted trio Watford, Norwich and Bournemouth are all in action.

Norwich will host Crystal Palace at Carrow Road while Watford face a tough trip to Everton.

Bournemouth will begin their first season in the top-flight at home to Aston Villa

The other 3pm kick-off today is between Leicester and Sunderland in a meeting of two of last season's relegation contenders.

Meanwhile, champions Chelsea will begin their title defence this evening when they host Swansea in the late kick-off at 5.30pm.

After last night's win for Brighton, the rest of the Championship sides begin their campaign today.

Cardiff host Fulham in a noon start at the Cardiff City Stadium, while Leeds are at home to Burnley at 12.30pm.

Among the other games, Derby will be looking to make up for the disappointment of missing out on promotion last season as they start away from home against Bolton and Mick McCarthy's Ipswich will travel to face Brentford.

There are three matches this evening in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

In the late kick-off, Cork City have a chance to close the gap on leaders Dundalk after they were held to a scoreless draw last night.

The Leesiders travel to The Showgrounds to face Sligo Rovers, who will have new manager Micky Adams in charge for the first time.

Meanwhile, Bray Wanderers host Drogheda United at the Carlisle Grounds from 5.45pm, while Bohemians visit Limerick for a 6.30pm start.

And in the First Division, Cobh Ramblers host Shelbourne at St Colman's Park tonight, where kick-off is at 7.45pm.

GAA

The last two remaining All-Ireland semi-final places will be decided today, with another quarter-final double-header at Croke Park.

The all-Ulster clash of Monaghan and Tyrone wil begin proceedings today, with Monaghan hoping to build on their Ulster final victory over Donegal, while Tyrone have gathered momentum through the qualifier series, having lost to Donegal at the start of the Championship.

Throw-in for the opening game is at 4pm.

In the second quarter-final, Mayo and Donegal will renew their rivalry in what is a repeat of the 2012 All-Ireland final and the 2013 All-Ireland quarter-final.

Throw-in for that one is at 6pm this evening.

The curtain-raiser at Croke Park today will be the All-Ireland Junior Championship final between Kerry and Mayo at 2pm.

There is also action this afternoon in the TG4 All Ireland Senior Ladies Football Championship.

It's a qualifier double-header at Kingspan Breffni Park.

First up will be the all-Ulster clash of Cavan and Monaghan at 5.15pm, which will be followed by the meeting of Armagh and Westmeath from 7.15pm.

Shane Lowry leads the Irish challenge at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

Despite a bogey on the last, Lowry sits on 4-under par at the start of the third round, four shots behind the outright leader, Jim Furyk.

RUGBY

Ireland's preparations from the Rugby World Cup step up a notch this afternoon as they travel to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff to face Wales in the first of four warm-up matches for Joe Schmidt's side.

The likes of Keith Earls, Felix Jones, Jordi Murphy and Tommy O'Donnell have all been given a chance to impress by the Irish management, while Paddy Jackson and Eoin Reddan will be the starting half-backs.

Kick-off in Cardiff is at 2.30pm.
