The Kick Off: Manchester United return to the Champions League group stages

SOCCER

The draw for the group stages of this season's Champions League will be made later this afternoon.

Manchester United will be in pot 2, after Wayne Rooney's first European hat-trick since his debut 11 years ago helped them to a 4-0 win away to Brugge, with progress coming 7-1 on aggregate.

United could be drawn to face Barcelona or Bayern Munich.

Arsenal and Manchester City are also in pot 2; as are Real Madrid who could provide tough opposition for top seeds Chelsea.

The draw gets underway at 4.45pm, Irish time.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez will this morning turn down a transfer request from John Stones.

The defender has been a summer-long target of Chelsea's, and has apparently made it known he wants a move to Stamford Bridge.

Stones played in Everton's extra-time 5-3 win over Barnsley in the Capital One Cup last night.

RUGBY

The Ireland squad will train at Carton House this morning ahead of Joe Schmidt naming his side for Saturday's World Cup warm-up with Wales.

Marty Moore is one of those looking to prove his fitness ahead of the last game before Schmidt finalises his 31 man panel.

England are set to confirm their 31 man squad for the World Cup later today.

Fly half Danny Cipriani looks set to miss out on a place in Stuart Lancaster's squad,

BOXING

High Performance head coach Billy Walsh looks set to leave for a post with USA Boxing.

The Irish Sports Council had agreed a deal with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association to keep the Wexford man at home, but an IABA board meeting has shot that proposal down.

During his time with the High Performance Unit, Irish boxing has accounted for seven of the last eight Irish Olympic medals.

ATHLETICS

The continuing battle of Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin is the main event on day six of the World Championships in Beijing.

They'll occupy lanes six and four respectively in the final of the men's 200 metres, which gets underway at 1.55pm.

There will also be medals decided in the men's triple jump as well as the women's 400 metres and hammer.

GOLF

The Czech Masters gets underway in Prague this morning.

Simon Thornton was in the first group and is currently -1 through five holes.

Michael Hoey, Damien McGrane, Kevin Phelan and Peter Lawrie are all among the field this week.

CRICKET

Ireland face World Champions Australia in a One-Day international today.

Action at Stormont is due to get underway just before 11.

CYCLING

Nicolas Roche remains in third place overall and Dan Martin is in fourth place at the start of Stage Six of the Vuelta a Espana.

Roche is just 16 seconds off the lead ahead of today's 200 kilometre treck from Córdoba to Sierra de Cazorla.

HORSE RACING

There's action at Bellewstown and Tipperary this evening.

At the County Meath course, the first of seven races goes to post at 4.15pm.

There are another seven races at Tipperary, where the first is off at 20 minutes later at 4.35pm.
