SOCCER
Manchester United host Newcastle in today's opening match in the Barclays Premier League.
United have enjoyed an impressive start to the new season, with two wins from their opening two matches as the team starts show further signs of improvement under manager Louis van Gaal.
Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 12.45pm.
In today's 3pm matches in the Premier League, Crystal Palace play host to Aston Villa, Tottenham travel to Leicester, Norwich are at home to Stoke, while Sunderland take on Swansea and newly-promoted Bournemouth visit Upton Park to face West Ham.
In the Championship, after a 1-1 draw between Birmingham and Derby last night, Leeds will host Sheffield Wednesday in the early game today at 12.30pm.
Later this afternoon, early leaders Ipswich will visit Preston while Hull are away to Charlton and Chris Hughton's Brighton are at home to Blackburn.
Meanwhile, Celtic will continue their Scottish Premiership title defence in the early start today against Dundee Utd, which kicks-off at noon.
After defending champions St Pat's were dumped out of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup last night, there are two more third round fixtures this evening.
Cockhill Celtic will host Longford Town at 5pm and Cobh Wanderers go up against Sligo Rovers at St Colman's Park at 7pm.
ATHLETICS
Two Irish athletes are in action at the World Athletics Championships today, with middle distance runner Mark English first up.
Thomas Barr is the other member of the Irish team in action on the opening day in Beijing.
The in-form Waterford man competes in the heats of the Men's 400-metre hurdles just before noon, Irish time.
GAA
It's semi-finals day in the Bord Gais Energy All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship.
The four provincial champions will converge on Semple Stadium for a mouth-watering double-header in Thurles.
First up will be the meeting of Wexford and Antrim.
Throw-in for that match is at 4pm.
The second semi-final at Semple Stadium this evening will feature Galway against Munster champions Limerick at 6pm.
Also today, the remaining two quarter-finals in the TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Championship are down for decision in Clones.
Armagh will face Donegal in an all-Ulster battle at 12.30pm before the meeting of Dublin and Monaghan from 2.15pm.
GOLF
Peter Lawrie is tied for sixth place ahead of the start of his third round at the Danish Open.
As he chases a playing card for next season, Lawrie will resume from 7-under par this morning.
England's David Horsey is the outright leader. He is three shots clear of the field on 12-under par.
CYCLING
This year's Vuelta Espana will have a neutralised opening stage after the organisers agreed that the results of today's Team Time Trial will not count towards the overall classifications.
Several riders, including Nicolas Roche, raised concerns about the 17km course, which hugs the Costa del Sol from Puerto Banus to Marbella and features several sandy sections.
RACING
There is racing here at the Curragh and Killarney today.
The final day of the Killarney festival features the MSL Cork Mercedez-Benz Handicap Chase, which offers a winner's cheque worth over €20K.
The opening race in Kerry is at 1.40pm.
The feature at the Curragh is the Group 2 Debutante Stakes with the first of a seven race card getting underway at 2.25pm.
Meanwhile, the Betfred Ebor is the highlight of today's racing at York, which goes to post at 3.45pm.
