The Kick Off: Harrington in danger of missing the cut in America

GOLF

Padraig Harrington faces an uphill struggle to make the cut at The Barclays in New Jersey.

An opening round 73 leaves the Dubliner on +3.

He is however, a shot better off than Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth who opened with a 74.

Three Americans and a Colombian head the field - Bubba Watson, Spencer Levin, Tony Finau and Camilo Villegas jointly lead on 5-under.

On the European Tour, Michael Hoey begins day two of the Czech Masters just two shots off the lead. The Ballymoney golfer tees off just before midday from -5.

Renato Paratore and Thomas Pieters are joint leaders on -7.

GAELIC GAMES

Kildare must begin the hunt for a new football manager following last night's resignation of Jason Ryan.

The former Wexford manager steps down after two years in charge.

A mixed 2015 saw the Lilywhites relegated to Division Three, before a Championship win over Cork was offset by heavy defeats to Dublin and Kerry.

Ryan's departure means that both the footballers and hurlers of Kildare are without managers.

There was one appointment in Leinster last night, with Denis Connerton confirmed to succeed Jack Sheedy as Longford football manager.

RUGBY

The Ireland squad will have a run-out at the Aviva today, ahead of tomorrow's World Cup warm-up game with Wales.

Several other internationals have the chance to impress away from Lansdowne Road this evening.

Just up the road in Donnybrook, Gordon D'Arcy and Michael Bent will line out for Leinster in their friendly with Moseley.

Tommy Bowe and Andrew Trimble man the wings for Ulster in their trip to Edinburgh.

While Munster play host London Irish at Irish Independent Park from 7pm.

SOCCER

SSE Airtricity Premier League leaders Dundalk are away to Bohemians in one of four top-flight matches this evening.

Cork City start the night ten points off the Lilywhites, and they play host to Galway.

Elsewhere, St. Pat's take on Derry, and bottom side Limerick travel to Drogheda.

Wexford Youths will look to protect their one-point lead at the top of the First Division when they go to Waterford in the south-east derby.

Second placed UCD cross the Liffey to face Shelbourne, and Cabinteely take on Finn Harps.

All of tonight's games have 7.45pm starts.

ATHLETICS

There are four gold medals to be decided at the World Championships in Beijing later.

The women's and men's short sprint hurdles, as well as the women's long jump and 200-metres are the features at the Birds Nest.

CYCLING

Dan Martin starts today's seventh stage of the Vuelta a Espana in third on general classification, and just 33 seconds down on leader Johan Esteban Chaves Rubio.

Nicolas Roche is just three seconds further back.

HORSE RACING

There is a seven race card tonight at Down Royal.

The first goes to post at 4.20pm
