The Kick Off: Golfers get ready for Chambers Bay test

GOLF

The 2015 US Open begins today at the the Chambers Bay Golf Club in Washington state.

The specially created links course, which was a former sand-and-gravel quarry, will host it's first Major just eight years after it officially opened for play.

Shane Lowry, Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy will be the Irish players in this week's field.

McDowell wil the first of the quartet to tee-off when he lines-up on the 10th tee-box alongside Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and American Matt Kuchar shortly after 4pm.

McIlroy tees off the reigning champion Martin Kaymer around 4.30pm. Both Lowry and Clarke are among the late starters. They tee off at 9pm.

HOCKEY

Ireland can qualify for the Olympics for the first time today if they beat China in their World league match in Valencia.

Darren Smith's side go into the game as underdogs against their higher ranked Asian opponents. Tip off is at 10.30am.

EUROPEAN GAMES

There's more action today at the the European Games in Baku.

Sean McComb is the next member of the Irish boxing squad into the ring when he faces a Belarussian opponent in the Men's Lightweight championship at 8.30am.

In Cycling, Caroline Ryan and Ryan Mullen contest the Women's and Men's Individual Time Trials.

Chloe Aboud and Alexander Dolly are in action in Taekwondo and Wrestling respectively.

HURLING

Waterford will face Clare in the Bord Gais Energy Munster under 21 semi final.

The Deise beat Cork 1-21 to 1-11 in Pairc Ui Rinn last night.

It's a first win for Waterford in the under 21 Championship since 2009. 

HORSE RACING

The Ascot Gold Cup provides the feature on the third day of action at this year's Royal Ascot Festival.

There's two other Irish challengers in the feature - 2013 runner-up Simenon and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Kingfisher.

The opening race of the day at Ascot is at 2.30pm.

There's also action here at Leopardstown this evening.

There's a seven-race card on offer, with the Group 3 Ballychorus Stakes providing the highlight.

The opening race will go to post at 5.50pm.
