The Kick Off: A very busy day of golf, GAA and hockey to come

HOCKEY

Ireland's women continue their Olympic quest this morning.

They take on the USA in the first of the 5th to 8th place playoffs in Valencia.

Darren Smith's charges will be hoping for a repeat of Tuesday's result, which saw them beat the US 2-0.

That game is underway at 10.30pm, and will be followed by the other playoff meeting of Spain and South Africa.

GAELIC GAMES

Mayo await the winners of this evening's Connacht Football semi-final meeting of Roscommon and Sligo.

Half-back Ronan Stack and half-forward Conor Daly come into the Rossies' starting XV at Markievicz Park, which is live on Off The Ball this evening.

Sligo have four debutants as they become the last county to make their Championship bow.

Roscommon's last outing saw them concede 10 points to London, but Sligo manager Niall Carew knows the scale of the task facing his side.

The rest of today's football action comes in the form of four round 1A qualifiers.

At 2pm, Offaly are unchanged for their meeting with Waterford in Dungarvan.

They throw in at the same time in Ruislip where London face Cavan.

Paul Kingston comes into the Laois full-forward line for their meeting with Antrim at O'Moore Park.

RACING

Ryan Moore will look to complete a remarkable Royal Ascot with yet more victories today.

He already has a record nine festival wins under his belt, and will be aboard the Aidan O'Brien contender Due Dilligence in today's feature, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Moore has mounts in each of today's seven races, with the first off at 2.30pm.

Here at home, the Jack Duggan Memorial Hurdle is the highlight of this afternoon's seven-race card at Gowran Park.

The Magners Ulster Derby features in a seven-race programme at Down Royal.

GOLF

Shane Lowry will start US Open Day 3 from 1-under par as the Offaly man looks to chase down the leaders at Chambers Bay.

Tiger Woods' form was a stark contrast as he missed the cut.

RUGBY

Seventh place is the goal for Ireland's U20s as they round off their World Championship campaign against Scotland.

Kick-off in Viadana is at midday, Irish time.

The final sees the Baby Blacks, New Zealand, face England, and that has a 7.30pm start.

EUROPEAN GAMES

There is an 'Ireland versus Italy' motif to today's action in Baku.

Three of the five Irish boxers in action face Italian opposition in their respective last-16 bouts today.

This evening, welterweight Adam Nolan goes up against Dario Morello, while super-heavy Dean Gardiner takes on Guido Vianello.

Around midday, lightweight Sean McComb faces Donato Cosenza.

Myles Casey is the first men's fighter to see action, taking on an Azerbaijani opponent.

Michaela Walsh steps into the ring with the Russian bantamweight Elena Saveleva at 8.30am this morning.

Darren Wallace also faces Italian opposition in the first round of the men's archery, while Caroline Ryan goes in the women's cycling road race, and Kieran Behan competes in the artistic discipline of the men's gymnastics.

SOCCER

The second round at the Women's World Cup gets underway tonight with the meetings of Germany and Sweden, and China and Cameroon.

Both Argentina and Paraguay are assured of quarter-final spots ahead of their final Group B matches at the Copa America.

They face Jamaica and Uruguay respectively tonight.

Germany go in search of their first win in Group A of the European U21 Championships this evening.

After Wednesday's draw with Serbia, they take on Denmark in Prague, with kick off at 7.45pm.

The hosts take on Serbia at 5pm.

TENNIS

Andy Murray's Wimbledon preparations continue with a Queens Club semi final against big-serving Serb, Viktor Troicki, this afternoon.

The other semi sees Kevin Anderson take on Frenchman Gilles Simon.
