The Final Whistle: Show-jumping controversy spoils Irish Olympic hopes

SOCCER

Cork City have dumped St Patrick's Athletic out of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup after an emphatic third round win tonight at Turners Cross.

The Leesiders scored four goals in the second half to defeat the defending champions.

Garry Buckley scored twice, while Mark O'Sullivan and Billy Dennehy got the other goals as they home side completely out-played the Saints during the second half.

Elsewhere tonight, Premier Division leaders Dundalk recovered from going a goal down to thrash their hosts, Galway United 4-1.

Sheriff YC twice came from behind to battle their way to a 2-2 draw against Athlone Town in Clontarf.

Bray Wanderers scored a controversial 1-0 win over Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

An own-goal from a cross by Bray's Peter McGlynn was awarded after just four minutes, but the Bohs players were furious that the goal was allowed to stand.

Derry City cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Drogheda United at the Brandywell and Killester United thrashed their hosts Tolka Rovers 4-0.

Meanwhile, Birmingham and Derby County played-out a 1-1 draw in tonight's only game in the Sky Bet Championship.

Irish midfielder Stephen Gleeson's goal just before half-time to put the Blues ahead, but Derby claimed a deserved point through Johnny Russell's 61st minute goal.

SHOWJUMPING

Ireland's showjumpers are waiting to learn if their Olympics hopes will be spared.

Robert Splaine's squad finished just 0.4 of a fault outside qualifying for Rio 2016 after a moment of high drama at the European Championships in Germany.

Team captain Cian O'Connor appeared to be on course for a clear round until a member of the ground staff ran across his line in the run-up to his only knocked fence.

Ireland finished in 7th place and just behind Spain, who claimed the last available Olympic spot.

The Irish team has already lost their first objection against the result of O'Connor's round - but they have now lodged a further appeal, which is being heard tonight.

GAA

Paul Brady has retained his World Handball title.

The Cavan native cruised to a resounding win over Killian Carroll of Cork in their final at the World Championships in Canada.

Brady stormed to a stunning 21-8,21-2 victory over Carroll to clam an incredidible fifth consecutive title.

GOLF

Paul Dunne is trailing in his quarter-final at the US Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields.

Dunne is 2 holes down through 12 against American Bryson DeChambeau in their match-play contest.
