The Final Whistle: McIlroy puts his feet up ... but it's enforced

GOLF

Rory McIlroy will not be able to defend his Open Championship.

The World No 1 has pulled out of next week's field at St Andrew's after confirming that he will not risk further damage to his ankle injury, which had already forced him to pull out of this week's Scottish Open.

The 26-year-old says that he is "taking a long term view" in relation to the injury and his recovery.

GAA

The Cork hurlers are unchanged ahead of their All-Ireland qualifier clash with Clare at Semple Stadium this Saturday.

Manager Jimmy Barry Murphy has named the same side that comfortably defeated Wexford in their first round qualifier last weekend.

However, the Rebels have been boosted by the return of Shane O'Neill from injury and Luke O'Farrell from suspension, with the pair both starting on the bench this weekend.

Wexford have won their third consecutive Leinster U21 title after a dominant victory over Kilkenny tonight.

The defending champions recovered from conceding a goal after just 14 seconds to register a massive 17-point victory.

Liam Hickey gave Kilkenny the perfect start when he blasted into the back of the net from the start, but JJ Doyle's side recovered superbly with goals from James Cash, Conor McDonald, Andrew Kenny and Cathal Dunbar securing a famous win by 4-17 to 1-9.

TENNIS

Richard Gasquet has produced a huge upset on Men's quarter-finals day at Wimbledon.

The Frenchman, who is seeded 21st, has defeated French Open champion Stan Wawrinka in an epic five-setter on Court Number One this evening, finally winning the deciding set 11-9 to advance to a semi-final showdown against the defending champion, Novak Djokovic.

On the other side of the draw, Roger Federer and Andy Murray both won their quarter-finals in straight sets to set up a repeat of their back-to-back meetings at Wimbledon during the summer of 2012.

SOCCER

Stoke have made a last-ditch attempt to hijack Shay Given's move to Middlesbrough.

The Irish international goalkeeper was widely tipped to be moving to Boro after he was released from the final year of his contract with Aston Villa.
