The Final Whistle: Leo Cullen's Leinster era begins and Celtic elation dampened slightly

SOCCER

Celtic still have work to do if they are to reach the group stages of the Champions League.

The Hoops claimed a 3-2 win tonight over Malmo in the first-leg of their play-off tie.

But the Scottish champions conceded a crucial second away goal in the 95th minute at Parkhead, which leaves them with a slender advantage ahead of the return-leg next Tuesday.

Leigh Griffiths continued his excellent run of form when he scored twice for the Hoops, but two goals from striker, Jo Inge Berget, who spent part of last season on-loan with Celtic, has left the tie delicately balanced.

Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney has issued a statement denying that his continued absence from the the Ireland squad is because of a lingering feud with Roy Keane.

The veteran centre half insists that he now has a good relationship with the Ireland assistant boss.

The 34-year-old says that he now needs the international break to recover from the rigours of playing regular club football in the Premier League and says that he told Martin O'Neill of his decisions.

Delaney has also contradicted O'Neill's recent suggestion that he had demanded a regular starting berth with Ireland.

RUGBY

Leinster have appointed Leo Cullen as their new Head Coach.

The former European Cup winning captain has agreed a two-year contract after he was appointed as interim head coach following Matt O'Connor's departure at the end of last season.

SHOWJUMPING

Ireland's showjumpers are just one spot outside the Olympic qualification places after the opening day of action at the European jumping championship.

Robert Splaine's team opened with eight faults from Denis Lynch but followed up with clear rounds from Bertram Allen and Greg Broderick before team anchor Cian O'Connor dropped one rail.

With two days of jumping to go, the team is well placed to achieve a spot at Rio 2016.

ATHLETICS

Marathon world record holder, Paula Radcliffe says that she supports the advice from the World Anti-Doping Agency for athletes not to make their blood data public.

The three-time winner of the London Marathon has told the BBC that the test results are so complicated that they could be easily misunderstood or misinterpreted.

The 41-year-old says she proud of her career and has always been a clean athlete.
