The Final Whistle: Kildare will have to go in search of a new manager

GAA

Jason Ryan has resigned as manager of the Kildare senior footballers.

The Leinster Leader has reported that the former Wexford manager has stepped down from the role, while former selector Morgan O'Callaghan has paid tribute to Ryan for the "passion and enthusiasm" that he showed during his two-year tenure in charge.

The departure was announced at a meeting of Kildare County Board on Thursday night.

The Lilywhites suffered relegation from Division 2 of the League this season and their championship campaign came to a shuddering halt after a 27-point defeat to Kerry in the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

Both Kildare senior inter-county teams are now managerless after 2014 Christy Ring Cup winning manager Brian Lawlor has stepped from his role in charge of the hurlers earlier this week.

SOCCER

Arsenal and Man City have both been handed tough draws in the Champions League.

Arsene Wenger's side will once again have to go up against Bayern Munich after the two clubs were drawn in Group F alongside Olympiakos and Dinamo Zagreb.

Bayern have knocked the Gunners out of Europe in two of the last three seasons.

Man City face a real battle to reach the knockout stages. They will have to take on Italian champions Juventus, Spanish side, Sevilla and Germany's Borussia Monchengladbach in Group D.

Chelsea's toughest opponents in Group G will be FC Porto, while Manchester United are in Group B alongside PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg.

Southampton's European campaign has brought to a premature halt.

The Saints suffered a 1-0 loss in Denmark tonight against FC Midtjylland, saw them lose out 2-1 on aggregate.

Morten Duncan Rasmussen scored the only goal on the night as the Premier League outfit were left to rue the 1-1 draw that they were held to last week at St Mary's.

RUGBY

Johnny Sexton and Paul O'Connell will both make their first starts of the season for Ireland on Saturday after being included in the team for the latest World Cup warm-up game against Wales.

Rob Kearney, Peter O'Mahony and Conor Murray have also been selected, while Luke Fitzgerald has been given his chance to prove himself at outside centre.

Meanwhile, head coach Joe Schmidt has confirmed that Cian Healy has stepped up his training this week after emerged that the prop took part in a scrum session today and could now play a part of next week's match against England.

CRICKET

Ireland's cricketers have missed out on a famous win over Australia in their One Day International at Stormont.

The Aussies have won rain-interrupted match by 23 runs in Belfast.

The home side were given a target of 181 runs in 24 overs but they were bowled out for just 157.
