The Final Whistle: From McClean to Baku

SOCCER

James McClean has won a return to the Premier League.

West Brom have completed the £1.5M capture of the Irish international from Wigan.

The left winger has signed a three-year deal with West Brom and the club have also got the option of extending that contract by another year.

The draw for the first qualifying rounds for next season's European competitions were held this morning.

League champions Dundalk will go up against BATE Borisov in the second round of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

The first leg will be held in Belarus on July 14th or 15th with the second-leg taking place a week later at Oriel Park.

In the Europa League, Shamrock Rovers and UCD will both face teams from Luxembourg while Cork City must travel to Iceland to play KR Reykjavik and St Pats will have home advantage for the return-leg of their clash with Skonto Riga of Latvia.

EUROPEAN GAMES

Brendan Irvine has secured Ireland's first medal of the inaugural European Games.

The 19-year-old is guaranteed at least a bronze medal in the Men's Light-flyweight division after winning his quarter-final.

But there was disappointment for flyweight Ceire Smith and super-heavyweight Dean Gardiner, who both lost their quarter-finals.

GAA

Jack O'Connor has been appointed the new manager of the Kerry U21 footballers.

The current Kerry Minor boss has been involved with 15 All Ireland winning sides throughout his managerial career, leading the Kingdom to Sam Maguire in 2004, 2006 and 2009.

He has been appointed on a two-year term and replaces Darragh Ó Sé, who stepped-down earlier this year.

Legendary Tipperary hurler Jimmy Doyle has passed away.

The six-time All Ireland winner, who was a key member of the dominant Tipp teams of the 1960's, died suddenly earlier today.

The Thurles Sarsfields forward was included in both the Hurling Team of the Century in 1984 and the Team of the Millennium.
