The Final Whistle: Celtic dumped out of the Champions League

SOCCER

Celtic have been sent crashing out of the Champions League qualifiers.

The Hoops have been punished for a lacklustre defensive performance as they were beaten 2-0 tonight by their hosts Malmo, giving the Swedish side a 4-3 aggregate victory.

A first-half header by Malmo's top scorer Markus Rosenberg and a second half own-goal from Dedryck Boyata has condemned the Scottish champions to this season's Europa League.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila will rue a disallowed first half goal for his side when Nir Bitton's close-range strike ruled out, despite a clear handball by a Malmo defender.

Watford have been knocked-out of the League Cup second round.

The Premier League newcomers suffered a 1-0 defeat to Championship side Preston tonight.

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace both needed extra-time to get past Notts County and Shrewsbury Town respectively, while West Brom and Stoke were forced to penalty shoot-outs before finally getting past Port Vale and Luton Town.

Meanwhile, Arsenal and Tottenham were drawn together in the Third Round of the competition, while Manchester United and Liverpool face lower league opponents in Ipswich and Carlisle respectively.

GAA

Kilkenny manager Brian Cody says he is confident that Eoin Larkin will be fit for this year's All Ireland final.

There were fears that the former Hurler of the Year would miss the upcoming showdown against Galway after suffering a thumb injury in training, but Cody insists that he has got no concerns over the 31-year-old's availability.

Meanwhile, Frank Fitzsimmons has been retained as manager of the Antrim senior footballers.

Fitzsimmons has been handed a further two-year term and will appoint his own backroom team in the coming weeks.

Gerard McNulty, who was one of Fitzsimmons' senior selectors this year, will be in charge of the under 21's along with former Minor manager Sean McGoldrick.

Meanwhile, the Antrim clubs have been invited to nominate candidates for the vacant Senior Hurling manager post.

RUGBY

Marty Moore and Andrew Trimble could both feature in Ireland's World Cup warm up against Wales.

Moore is still wearing a protective boot and did not take part in full training yesterday but still has not been ruled out of Saturday's match.

Trimble has returned to training after a foot injury.

Meanwhile, assistant coach Les Kiss has revealed that Cian Healy is being monitored on an hourly basis as he continues his recovery from a neck injury.

CYCLING

Nicolas Roche narrowly missed out on a stage win at the Vuelta Espana today.

The Team Sky rider had to settle for fourth place behind Spaniard Alejandro Valverde during today's fourth stage.

Roche remains in third place overall, 12 seconds behind the race leader, Esteban Chaves.

HOCKEY

The Irish men's hockey team have reached the semi-finals of the European Championships for the first time.

Craig Fulton's side claimed a 2-2 draw against Belgium in London today to secure their place in the last four, where they will face Pool A winners the Netherlands.
