The Final Whistle: Andy Lee's Thomond Park dream scuppered for now

BOXING

Andy Lee will have to wait for at least one more fight before he can defend his title in Limerick.

Lee's upcoming world title fight against Billy Joe Saunders has been moved from Thomond Park after he was forced to postpone the bout.

A recent virus has forced Lee to push the date of the fight back to October 10th at the Manchester Arena, where it will join the bill alongside Terry Flanagan's WBO lightweight title defence.

Co-promoter Frank Warren says that the decision to move the fight had nothing to do with ticket sales as he told Off The Ball in an interview tonight:

Tickets for the fight night on September 19th will now be refunded, or fans can alternatively exchange them for tickets for the rescheduled fight in Manchester

Also in boxing, Joe Ward, Michael Conlan and Dean Walsh are all through to the semi-finals of the European Championships in Bulgaria.

The trio are all now guaranteed to return home with at least a bronze medal this week after winning their quarter-finals today.

All three have also secured a place at this year's World Championships in Qatar, which will also double as an Olympic qualifier.

However, there was disappointment for Adam Nolan, who lost his quarter-final in the welterweight division.

GAA

Tiernan McCann is set to lodge an appeal against the eight-week ban that could rule him out of Tyrone's All-Ireland semi-final against Kerry.

The Central Competition Controls Committee have handed down a two-month suspension after the player was charged with misconduct.

However, the Tyrone management have indicated that the player will now take his case to the Disputes Resolution Authority to try and have the punishment overturned.

Meanwhile, John Evans has stepped down as manager of the Roscommon senior footballers after informing the county board that he would not be seeking a fourth year in charge.

SOCCER

Celtic have dropped their first points of the new Scottish Premiership season.

The Hoops were held to a 2-2 draw by their hosts Kilmarknock.

Hearts have now gone top of the SPL table after a 2-0 win over Motherwell while Inverness and Partick Thistle played out a scoreless draw.
