Sinead Lynch and Claire Lambe finish sixth in their Olympics rowing final

Claire Lambe and Sinead Lynch have finished sixth in the final of the Lightweight Double Sculls in Rio today.

As Irish rowing took centre stage for the afternoon, Lambe and Lynch could not keep pace with eventual winners Netherlands. Canada and China rounded out the top three in an epic race to the finish line.

Lynch and Lambe appeared to be falling behind from the start and with China and South Africa setting the pace early on, it became apparent that the pair would struggle to break into the medals.

Having finished their semi-final with a time of 7.18:24, behind winners Netherlands and second-placed Canada, the Irish duo went into Friday's final safe in the knowledge that they had finished quicker than the other semi-finalists and could be in with a shout for a medal.

Lambe and Lynch finished second in their heat earlier this week to advance to the semi-final, but improved on that performance today to clinch third spot and qualify for the final.
