Rio's Olympic venues will be checked daily to stop diseases spreading

Rio de Janeiro's Olympic and Paralympic venues will be checked daily to help stop the spreading of the disease Zika during the Games.

Zika is causing babies to be born with birth defects, including smaller than usual heads. It can be spread by mosquitoes. American health authorities have already advised against pregnant women travelling to Brazil and other countries that hosts the disease.

Health and safety teams will be based in the Olympic and Paralympic sites daily, looking for standing waters that can help mosquitoes spread the disease.

The Games have already been struck by a series of planning issues. These include raw sewage floating in the sailing and rowing venues, which is being seen as a health hazard to competitors.

Ticket sales for the events are already well behind the London 2012 levels where many sports were well over-subscribed. The poor ticket sales is being attributed to the poor economic conditions in the host nation.
