Chinese swimmer fails drugs test at Rio Olympics

Chinese swimmer, Chen Xinyi has tested positive for a banned substance at the Rio Olympics according to media reports.

The 18-year-old failed a test for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide and has asked the International Olympic Committee for a hearing to look into the matter.

The Chinese Swimming Assocation has required Chen to cooperate with the investigation, state news-agency's Xinhua said.

"If the assertion is true, the CSA will earnestly implement anti-doping regulations and safeguard legal interests according to law," Xinhua cited an unnamed CSA official as saying in a statement.

"The Chinese Swimming Association resolutely opposes the use of banned substances, will actively cooperate with the investigation by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and respect its final ruling," the official said.

The diuretic is a known masking agent and can be used to induce weight loss or cover up the presence of other banned substances by diluting urine.

The Olympics suffered a lot of negative attention before it even began when a blanket-ban of Russian athletes was rescinded despite a report being issued that stated a widespread culture of doping was present in the country. This is the latest bad news as doping now appears to remain an ever-present in the games.
