Ben Foster claims lack of confidence has Watford circling the drain

The fight against relegation from the Premier League will go to the final day after Watford's 4-0 defeat at home to Manchester City.

The result effectively buys Aston Villa and Bournemouth until Sunday before it's settled who joins Norwich City in next season's Championship.

Watford have picked up just two wins since the restart, and the hammering from City was their fifth loss in that time.

Raheem Sterling scored twice in the first half at Vicarage Road, and also had a penalty saved by Ben Foster.

Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte added second half goals for City, who are warming up nicely for their Champions League last-16 second leg with Real Madrid.

"I don't think we helped ourselves," Foster told Sky Sports after the game, "I don't think we did enough to do anything other than what the result suggested.

"It's a case of just confidence at the minute - it's so, so crazy low, which I don't know why it is, or why it should be.

"I think you get into a state of just trying minimise as much damage as you can, but I think it's such a dangerous way to approach games.

"But they're Man City, they're very very good."

Foster was asked if that low morale was anything to do with the sacking of manager Nigel Pearson at the weekend," No, not necessarily.

"I think we're well versed in what goes on at this club. It is what it is.

"You honestly just get used to it now in football nowadays, nothing really ever seems to shock.

"You've just got to roll with the punches. You can't ever blame anything other than your own performances.

"I think everyone of us has to look at ourselves. We've got a massive game on Sunday, and that's all we've got to look at now."

Watford need a result on Sunday against Arsenal if they're to avoid ending a run of five seasons in the Premier League.
