From Birdman to FIFA corruption | Screenwriter Armando Bó

Armando Bó is a fourth-generation filmmaker, and it's clear from his latest Amazon Original that he is keen to tell stories that educate the viewer.

Perhaps best known as a screenwriter on the hit movie Birdman, an Academy Award-winning Best Picture, Argentinian Bó has turned his hand to something different - a story on the FIFA corruption scandal of 2015.

Bó joined Eoin Sheahan for a chat on his latest project, El Presidente, on OTB AM, and he revealed he had turned down multiple big opportunities to tell a story he cared about.

"For me after Birdman it wasn't easy to find interesting things, you know? Of course you are offered many, many things and superhero [movies], but it wasn't that moment.

"It's a dance of projects everywhere, it's not just me. It's a big industry, [you might have] an aquatic movie, a Baywatch movie, dinosaurs, of course if a good story is related to that I would like to do it!

"If they offered me The Joker, I would say 'Yeah, for sure!' If it's just a soap, or boring superhero [movie] it's not something I really want to be involved [in]."

Bó added that when he looks back on his career years from now, it is risk-taking that will help him create movies and shows with a deeper story, much like the El Presidente series.

"You spend so much energy and time and blood into a project that I really don't want to throw that into whatever. I guess now that I've done this, and it's a bigger thing, international, it's a bigger opportunity for me to grow, and in a way it's a decision.

"When you see The Joker is a really hard, strong movie, you see Parasite winning the Oscar, so I guess that it's really a big combination as a team. When you find somebody who is brave... Amazon took a risk.

"When you take risk, in general you can win. If you lose, you lose but succeed in taking a risk. It's so sad when you see so much money and spending in things that are not meaningful, that aren't telling you something new.

"It's not just a job for me, it comes from a deeper place. To tell stories and do things with meaning. It's something that, when I look back when I'm older, I would like to see something that is really interesting and different, you know?

"I would like to have a catalogue of different types of films and tones..."
