Arc lined up after Stradivarius claims 4th Goodwood Cup

Stradivarius claimed a fourth consecutive Goodwood Cup for trainer John Gosden, but was made to work for the victory.

The Ascot Gold Cup winner was pushed all the way by 20/1 shot Nayef Road, who was ridden by Andrea Atzeni - the jockey who delivered the first two of those successes for Stradivarius at Glorious Goodwood.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Irish Derby-winner Santiago was third.

Frankie Dettori admits the race was not the one he was expecting, admitting to Racing TV he had to resort to his plan-B.

"Well obviously Santiago's the one that I feat the most," he told Lydia Hislop.

"I was trying to get in front of him from the start, but Tom Marquand [aboard Who Dares Wins] already had that slot.

"And as we go to the back, I got in behind the wheels of Santiago, and I thought with 15lbs less weight he'll make the weight difference count and he'll kick early.

"But it turned out to be a 2f sprint. So, if you want to sprint with Stradivarius you've got to be pretty good.

"And even though that I was boxed in for a furlong, once he got out he's got too many gears.

"I was surprised actually at the way the race panned out. For a Goodwood Cup to become a 2f sprint was what I didn't expect."

After the race, Gosden confirmed that Stradivarius will go head-to-head with stablemate Enable in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Dettori admits that may provide him with something of a pickle at Longchamps, "He's toying with the idea of having a crack at the Arc. I'm not going to try to put him off but if he wants to, why not?

"Obviously I'm on Enable at the moment, but who knows? I'm not going to discourage him - he's done nothing wrong.

"It's a possibility that the ground will become very soft, well he doesn't mind. So be it, maybe."
