Amy Hunter makes history on birthday with Irish century

It was a birthday to remember for Amy Hunter as she made history in Ireland's one-day international with Zimbabwe.

The 16-year-old became the youngest ever player to score a one-day international century in Harare.

Hunter scored 121 from 127 balls to help Ireland to a record total of 312 from their 50 overs.

The youngest centurion up until Hunter's exploits was Shahid Afridi, who scored 102 for Pakistan at 16 years and 217 days.

She also becomes just the fourth Irish player to exceed 100 runs.

"It feels really good, it's a bit surreal right now," Hunter said in the aftermath.

"I didn't really know what to think to be honest, when I was coming up to my 50 I just wanted to get by and get there.

"When it came to my hundred I didn't know what to do I didn't know whether to take the helmet off or keep it on or anything, but yeah, it was unbelievable."

She conceded she did feel nervous at certain stages - but that didn't stop her notching a superb 121.

"I probably felt more nervous for my 50.

"I didn't do so well in the first three games so I was just delighted to be out there, to get that first four away and then from there it just flew to be honest.

"From 50 to 100 felt like it went much quicker than from naught to 50 so it was really good."

Hunter's partnership with captain Laura Delany also reached 143, which is the sixth-highest total for a partnership in ODI history for Ireland.

The visitors lead the series 2-1, with today's match the last of the tour.
