Tom Brady announces he is leaving the New England Patriots

Six-time Superbowl champion Tom Brady has announced via social media that he is leaving the New England Patriots after 20 years at the franchise.

Brady, who is 42 years old, had been rumoured to leave the Massachusetts based side after being beaten by the Tennessee Titans in the NFL wildcard playoffs.

The three-time NFL Most Valuable Player took to Twitter and Instagram to announce his departure, thanking his coaches, teammates and supporters for his successful career at the Patriots.

“Although my football journey will take place elsewhere, I appreciate everything that we have achieved and am grateful for our incredible TEAM accomplishments.

“I have been privileged to have had the opportunity to know each and everyone of you, and to have the memories we’ve created together," he wrote.

The quarterback, originally from California, did not say he was retiring and indicated that he would continue his career elsewhere.

Brady signed a one-year deal last August that foreshadowed this decision, indicating that he wanted to explore free agency for the first time in his career.

While no move is set in stone for Brady, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Chargers appear to be the most likely destinations for the four-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.
